The Pathfinders
A bold new series of biographical novels on the historical mountain men that every fan of the nine-volume Titus Bass saga will want to read and re-read for years to come!
Although many have tried, no one else has ever captured all the drama and danger, romance and wayfaring of that all-too-brief era known as the American fur trade the way Terry C. Johnston held readers spellbound, eagerly awaiting each new Titus Bass adventure since Carry the Wind was published in 1982.
With the forthcoming February release of Wind Walker, the final volume in the saga of Ol’ Scratch, the fans of Titus Bass and the life of the free trapper will find this new series will take the circle!
Sometime early 2002, St. Martin’s Press will release the first of these biographical novels about the historical figures who loom large in the early exploration of the Rocky Mountain west. If the response worldwide is anything near what it has been for the Titus Bass saga, then the publisher will continue to release one of The Pathfinders every winter.
At this point, while Terry is writing the first volume on the life of John Colter, he has plans outlines written for at least sixteen -- that’s 16! -- Pathfinder novels on the men who carved their destinies out of the Far West, men whose names are now linked to mountain peaks and valleys, rivers and passes too.
These are the men who opened the Far West to those civilized folks who came in their wake: the settlers, the miners, the railroaders, which eventually brought about the pacification of what had once been a dangerous, unmapped wilderness where only the bravest and most savvy lived out season after season . . . a land where the following men were the first to set down their moccasins, an untamed country where only the wild warrior tribes and fabled beasts of the mountains lived unchallenged.
Volume 1 -- John Colter Volume 9 -- James P. Beckwith
Volume 2 -- Hugh Glass Volume 10 -- Thomas L. Fitzpatrick
Volume 3 -- Jim Bridger Volume 11 -- Dick Wootton
Volume 4 -- Jedediah Strong Smith Volume 12 -- William Sublette
Volume 5 -- Christopher "Kit" Carson Volume 13 -- Joseph R. Walker
Volume 6 -- Joseph L. Meek Volume 14 -- James Clyman
Volume 7 -- Edward Rose Volume 15 -- Doc Newell
Volume 8 -- William S. "Ol’ Bill" Williams Volume 16 -- Mariano Medina
In the near future, Terry will begin writing what the publishing industry calls "stand-alone" novels, books that are not part of any series. These novels will be released during the years when one of The Pathfinders volumes does not appear.
Some of the subjects the author has outlined for these future, "stand-alone," novels are:
