American Beauty Peace Rose
by Jane Quinn

"Many of you know that I find inspiration for quilt designs on floors. This particular one came from a lovely place where we stayed in Ireland called the Irish Manor. I asked the receptionist if she minded if I took a photo of the tile floor in the lobby. She responded that I could do that and asked if I had seen the floor in the pub. I hadn’t. The floor in the pub coordinated with the lobby floor and was a more interesting pattern. The lobby was a pretty basic Ohio Star (in Ireland??) but the pub floor—well, I thought it was pretty special.

As I work on quilts I usually name them. The Peace Rose was developed during the Eisenhower Administration I believe. It is a pretty rose and my mother fell in love with it at that time. Even though the Peace Rose is a creamy color and the roses in the fabric are red-orange I thought it would be a good name for the quilt."

North Coast Limited

This quilt features a rare and collectible travel poster from a series of posters by the Northern Pacific Railway in the 1930's. The NPRR was called the "Yellowstone Park Line." Gustav Krollmann was a German emigrant who settled in St. Paul, MN and worked as a staff artist for the NPRR. He is recognized as one of the finest poster artists of his time and his original posters are highly sought after.

Jane had the poster printed on fabric and integrated it into a railroad tracks pattern of her own design. Her quilt was honored as the Photo Finish in the September 2006 issue of The Quilter Magazine.

Scenes from Quilting in the Country

The line drawings depicting life at Quilting in the Country were done by a local artist.  Jane colored (with Crayons) a few parts of the design, embroidered with black floss and embellished with wonderful variegated rayon floss. The designs include our dinner bell, the quilt/ bike study, quilt judges (ducks), thru the gate to the house, hanging the quilts, the country store, and Lewis and Clark (our kittens) embroidered with variegated rayon floss.  Then once you've finished the 12 design blocks, you are ready to use Jane's checkerboard tile pattern to sash and border the quilt.

Utility Quilts

The story as told by Jane....

"My aunt Florence made 100's of utility quilts (yes, really) and I have several of those. They are practical, sturdy quilts and in the west are called suggans or cowboy quilts. Aunt Florence just used the rugged scraps that she had but we concentrated on an update of those antique quilts.

For the winter I hang antique utility quilts on my windows to keep the house warm. I layer an antique Utility quilt and crocheted tablecloth on my dining room table. Then I scatter objects from my sewing notions collection. It's fun to take a really good look at those items."

We created this pattern set using the quilts from my collection as inspiration. The set includes 5 different designs with color photos.

In honor of leap year and February having 29 days, we are going to offer the pattern set at 29% off this week.
