Hello Friend --

How is winter wherever you are? The weather in Bozeman continues being unseasonably warm and dry. It concerns me when the days feel much more like April and May weather than February.

In the past issues you have probably noticed the Fast Fundamentals class being offered. The class started last Sunday afternoon and what a fun afternoon it was. The talented first-time quilters chose some wonderful fabrics for their class sampler. They are quick learners and are anxious to get going on their first project. It seems like a real miracle to have a life where I can teach those eager to learn a lifetime skill. I’m very fortunate!

While going through the shirt boxes which contain my class samples, notes, and copies of handouts, I found a copy of the Ode to My Wife The Quilter. It was first introduced to me by my long ago quilt mentor, Jane Edie. When she stopped teaching the beginning quilting class at the Patchworks in the 1970’s Jane handed the opportunity and her class materials to me. She used the Ode to My Wife The Quilter in her classes.

Here it is, THE ODE TO MY WIFE THE QUILTER:

She learned to quilt on Monday.
Her stitches all were very fine.
She forgot to thaw out dinner
So we went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures on Tuesday.
She says they are a must.
They really were quite lovely
But she forgot to dust.

On Wednesday it was a sampler.
She says stipling’s fun.
What highlights! What shadows!
But the laundry wasn’t done.

Her patches were on Thursday –
Green, yellow, blue, and red.
I guess she was really engrossed;
She never made the bed.

It was wall hangings on Friday,
In colors she adores.
It never bothered her at all,
The crumbs upon the floors.

I found a maid on Saturday.
My week is now complete.
My wife can quilt the hours away;
The house will still be neat.

Well, it’s already Sunday.
I think I’m about to wilt.
I’ve cursed, I’ve raved, I’ve ranted,
The MAID has learned to QUILT!

I couldn’t help but wonder if the husbands of these wanna’be quilters knew what they were in for!

And speaking of husbands of quilters. Recently I was surprised when the receptionist at our dentist’s office came to visit us at Quilting in the Country. Her brother and sister-in-law were visiting from Idaho and she was certain that I would want to see their invention. They had just introduced a new product to the quilting world. It was fun to get acquainted with them and I asked if they could send me a product to test and the story of how the new light, Ecolux Light, was created.

Here is the story from Kim Stewart:

****

I’ve been quilting for over 20 years. 3 years ago I noticed that it was getting very difficult for me to see the projects I was working on. After discussing it with my husband, I went out and bought a high end sewing machine which I thought was going to have better lighting already built in. I was so excited to get it home, set it up and start my next project.

As I began sewing, I realized that this new machine was still not giving me enough light.

This was so frustrating!

That evening, when my husband came home from work, I asked him if there was any way we could create an LED lighting system for all sizes of sewing machines. After thinking about all the complaints over the years about poor lighting, I finally came up with an idea that would fit everyone’s needs.

Through the prototyping process I thought about all the ways that could make this lighting system work for everyone. How bright can I make the light? Where can it easily attach so it’s not in the way? How small can it be so it blends in with every machine? How can I make it environmentally friendly? How long can this light last? Can it easily travel for retreats? How can I make it cost effective? How can I make it so people don’t have to use other lighting systems along with it? How can it provide vertical lighting right on the project with no shadows?

So at the end of August 2010, the light was debuted at a quilt show in Kuna, ID. The response was completely unbelievable.

The phrase I heard and keep hearing is, “Wow, that light is incredible”

Ecoluxlighting was born.

See More Sew More!

After reading Kim’s letter I began to wonder how her husband Scott felt when Kim started quilting. I’m sure he is proud of how the quilting fever has affected both of them.

Kim did send us a sample product. After using the product we’re 100% sold on it. We love it! The LED lights that can be easily attached to any sewing machine are nothing short of a miracle. We have one attached to our shop machine and even though it has two great lights that are part of the machine the Ecolux makes an amazing improvement. I can’t wait for the lights that will fit my Featherweight and my house machine to arrive.

If your husband is wondering what you’d like for a Valentines gift just give him a hint! There is absolutely no question in my mind—you will love this new light. What’s the old adage - a sight for sore eyes? This little light is a miracle for sore eyes!

Before ordering you will need to measure the length of the throat on your machine so we can let you know which is the correct size for your machine. Please call us (or ask your husband to call) 406-587-8216. Order by phone or come see us!

We carry two sizes of the amazing light: Everything you need is in the Complete Kit. All you need to do is stick the light under the throat of your machine, attach the switch and plug into the power cord. The light strip never has to be removed from the machine. The lights also work well on long arm machines.

Light with 3 LED Bulbs Complete Kit $66.99
Light with 6 LED Bulbs Complete Kit $74.99

I really think this is the most amazing new product on the market since Ott Lights! To sweeten the deal for Valentine’s Day we’ll send the light to you with no postage charge.

HUNTER'S STAR QUILT

Juli Rognlie demonstrated how to make this quilt in August at our quilt show. Now is your chance to actually set aside some time to make one yourself. Using a unique ruler, learn a totally new way to make a Hunter's Star quilt that gives very accurate results for what used to be a challenging block. Juli doesn't often use specialty rulers, but she has totally fallen in love with this one. It offers the ability to easily vary the size of your block and quilt. Even those of you who are left-handed will love this -- the illustrations are provided for both right and left handed trimming!

Everything from scrappy to a traditional two-color fabric choice works with this design.
Saturday, February 18. 10am - 4pm. $32. Bring a sack lunch.

The ruler includes instructions for $25.50.
A kit is available that includes the fabrics (all batiks) for the quilt shown without the two borders (72" x 72") to allow for your own color emphasis. The cost of the kit is $95.
