The Wiz Zumwalt Series - by Rick Cook

Book Review, © Copyright 1997, Jim Loy

This is humorous fantasy about computer programmer Wiz Zumwalt who gets summoned from his Silicon Valley office into a world of magic:

  1. Wizard's Bane
  2. Wizardry Compiled
  3. Wizardry Cursed
  4. Wizardry Consulted
  5. Wizardry Quested

In this magic land, magic is an art. Magicians learn to do magic, exactly as it is written down. They innovate at their peril. Well, Wiz Zumwalt instructs a demon to do the simplest of spells, like moving one molecule of air. Then he has the demon execute an infinite loop. And the demon works so fast that this simple spell becomes a dangerous storm. He invents a compiler, which compiles his code into powerful spells. And he becomes the strongest of wizards, and the target of evil forces.

In some of these stories, he recruits programmers from our world, the forces of evil invade our world (and are attacked by carrier-based fighter jets), and an insane hacker invades the magic world. It's good fun.

The first two books are out of print, seperately. But, they are combined into one book, The Wiz Biz. To order any of these books from Amazon.com, click on the title, below:
