Unabomber - by Chris Waits and Dave Shors

Book Review, © Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

This book is subtitled, "The Secret Life of Ted Kaczynski." It is about his life, as a hermit, in the mountains of Montana. And it was written by his next door neighbor, someone who thought that Kaczynski was a friend. This is during the time that Kaczynski was planting bombs and mailing bombs to people that he hated. He killed three people, and injured many others.

This book is not the whole story. It does not tell much of Kaczynski's life before moving to Montana, before he made bombs. There is very little about his brother, who turned him in to the authorities. There is little about his arrest, in which he was tricked into leaving his cabin, unarmed.

What we do have here is very good reading. We have Chris Waits' interactions with Kaczynski, and observations of Kaczynski. We have many excerpts from Kaczynski's journals. And we have hints of what was going on in Kaczynski's mental world.

Kaczynski is currently in prison, with numerous life sentences, and no chance of parol.
