Big Trouble - by Dave Barry

Book Review, © Copyright 1999, Jim Loy

This may be the best book I have ever read, along with the Bible and How To Lie With Statistics - by Darrell Huff. It is an action novel (not for the kiddies, because of language) by Dave Barry, prize winning author of brilliantly silly essays. The book is very very funny, full of thousands of really funny lines. Over and over, we find Barry answering the question, "Just what can go wrong with this situation." I have read books, and seen movies, that are so complicated that you can't help but get lost. This book is even more complicated, and it all makes sense. Dave Barry is the true master of making complexity look easy. He has seven or eight sub-stories, all rushing together toward critical mass, and he effortlessly throws in Jerry Springer, an evil Elizabeth Dole, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for good measure. We never find out what happens to Buffy, but I don't think we have to worry. I plan to read this book three or four more times. It is hard to imagine more great humor in one book.

This book is now a "major" movie, starring Tim Allen (very funny, much like the book). And there is a sequel to the book, Tricky Business.
