This book is subtitled, "An Ancient Disease in the Twentieth Century." It is about the Bubonic Plague, which wiped out much of the human race several times in the Middle Ages, and was called the "Black Death." It's a fascinating story.
But, the reader notices right away that the Bubonic Plague is alive and well, today, on the continents of Asia, Africa, South America, and North America (western USA). It lives among the rodent population, mainly in the woods (squirrels, for example). It will probably never be wiped out. And, it does spring up in humans from time to time. The book tells of some case histories.
The Bubonic Plague is a fairly dangerous disease, not usually fatal, which is likely to be misdiagnosed because of its rarity. People with unhealthy lungs (smokers) may be at greater risk. And it may, some day, become the pandemic (an epidemic gone wild) that it did in the past.
This is an interesting book.
Dr. Gregg is the author of A Virus Of Love, & Other Tales Of Medical Detection.
