In Myst, the adventure game, there was something disturbing. I explored several worlds, on my computer. And there was evidence of people. But, the people were gone, all except for three people trapped inside magic books. And there were ominous hints about the fate of all of these missing people. I recommend replaying the game (and its sequels), looking at them as fiction. There are now three books which give us further insight into the worlds of Myst.
In Myst, The Book Of Atrus (by Rand Miller, Robyn Miller, with David Wingrove), we have the story of Atrus and his father. They create worlds by writing books about them. But Atrus' father is mad, and is destroying more than he creates. In Myst, The Book Of Ti'ana (by Rand Miller, with David Wingrove), we have the story of how mad men, seeking revenge, destroy the entire D'ni civilization.
In Myst, The Book Of D'ni (by Rand Miller, with David Wingrove), we discover a seductively perfect world.
These are heavy stories about absolute power corrupting absolutely. Very good stories.
