The Childhood of Sherlock Holmes - by Mona Morstein

Book Review, © Copyright 2000, Jim Loy

This book is subtitled "The Butler's Tale." When Sherlock Holmes supposedly died at Reichenbach Falls, Josiah Cobbett (a newspaper reporter) decided to track down the elusive early history of Holmes' early life. His researches had to be suppressed at the time (as Holmes was not really dead) and were only rediscovered recently. From this excellent premise, Ms. Morstein has built a very good, but tragic story. She does tragedy very well. Young Mycroft Holmes is a particularly strong and interesting character. Of course, the book is not perfect. On one occasion, a character proceeds to "ingress" (which is a noun in my dictionary) a chair, an attempt at Victorian English which I found amusing. But, it is a very good and interesting story. I highly recommend it.
