Who Says Elephants Can't Dance - by Louis V. Gerstner

Book Review, © Copyright 2004, Jim Loy

In 1993, IBM (former leader in technology and a worldwide power) was on the brink of bankruptcy. Then Mr. Gerstner became CEO and turned it around, not only saving IBM, but leading it back to a top position in the industry. How did he do it? There were no easy, obvious fixes. It was a painful process, with plenty of resistance from within IBM. But he did it, and this book tells in plain English a great deal about how IBM was saved, and how other businesses can be saved, mainly by tough leadership.

I usually fall asleep right away, when I try to read about money or business. But this book was very interesting, all the way through. I got to a chapter about IBM's internal culture, which at first I thought was a rehash of earlier chapters, but it was interesting too. In particular, this book gives insight into how any large, complicated endeavor can be saved from defeat. Not with formulas, but with leadership.
