Dune - by Frank Herbert

Book Review, © Copyright 2001, Jim Loy

When I made my personal list of the best books ever written (How To Lie With Statistics - by Darrell Huff, Fatal Storm - by Rob Mundle, Big Trouble - by Dave Barry and the Bible), I forgot all about Dune. The book is amazing. Its story is intriguingly complex (and occasionally violent). And the desert planet of Arakis (Dune) is vividly created with words.

There are sequels to Dune. I read Dune Messiah, and it is very good too, in some ways at least as interesting as Dune. I have not read the others. The only reason that I have not read them, is that I cannot find my copies of them, and I don't want to waste money buying them again. I hear that they are also very good. And now Frank Herbert's son has written some sequels.

Way back when I heard that a movie was being made of Dune, I thought that it would be the best movie ever made. The movie was good and bad, mostly a disappointment. But I then realized that the scope (complexities and massive amount of small but important details) made such a movie nearly impossible to create. Now there is a second movie. It is better in some ways. But it too is only a small overview of the book.
