The Best Of Annals Of Improbable Research (AIR) - edited by
Marc Abrahams
Book Review, © Copyright 1998, Jim Loy
This book is a collection from Annals Of Improbable Research, a
journal dedicated to humor in science. It contains real (but funny) articles
from other sources, and made up articles written just for this journal. Among
other things, we learn:
- You should not use electric shock to treat rattlesnake bite. A man
really did hook himself up to a car battery after being bitten by a
rattlesnake, and nearly killed himself.
- A scientist found the expression "Holy Grail" mentioned in 737
separate scientific articles.
- How to melt cheese with a laser.
- Peanut butter has no measurable effect on the rotation of the earth.
- Apples and oranges can be compared, and are found to be quite
similar.
- Xrays show that Barney, who claims to be a dinosaur, is actually more
closely related to humans.
- A woodchuck can chuck 361.9237001 cubic centimeters of wood per day.
- A doornail really is dead, by any number of clinical definitions.
- How many people accidentally step on a gummy worm on a sidewalk.
It's funny stuff. Their WWW page is http://www.improb.com.
