Double Hit Animation

© Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

double hit animationa slower double hit animationOn the left is a slow motion animation, showing an illegal double hit. Each time the cue struck the cue ball, I drew a vertical black line. Even at this slow speed, it is very difficult to see the double hit. But notice how the cue ball follows the red ball (in a manner different from follow using top-spin). The flickering of the red ball, and the disappearing green cloth is caused by a flaw in Jasc's Animation Shop. On the right is the same thing in even slower motion. And it is still difficult to see. What happens is this:

  1. The cue strikes the cue ball, which moves forward.
  2. The cue ball strikes the red ball, and stops.
  3. The cue strikes the cue ball a second time, which moves forward again.

If the cue had not struck the cue ball a second time, the cue ball would have stayed right where it was when it struck the red ball.
