206. Walter Irvien Eidson-4809 [scrapbook] (Belvaretta Henderson , Hezekiah Ashmore , Hugh , Michael , Kearns , William , Alexander , John , James , John , John , James , William , George , James , Robert ) was born on 3 Dec 1888 in Rose Hill, Iowa. He died on 3 Apr 1954 in Santa Clara, California. He was buried in San Francisco, California. Walter was employed as Policeman, Detective, Carpenter, Magician. He resided in Iowa / California.
Walter was born at Rose Hill, Iowa on the 3rd. of December 1888. He attended the Tom Benton School near Fremont until the age of about ten. He explained his reason for leaving school in papers he wrote in 1935:
"I fainted one day and hit my head against a stove. Two hours after I come to and a doctor and 2-3 other men was holding me in bed and my left eye was turned up in my head caused by my hitting it on the stove in my fall and it took months for the doctor to bring my eye back straight and he forbid me to read or write, for a time, for if I did I would go blind in my left eye and maybe my right so this ended all of my schooling".
In 1917 Walter was married to Julia Marra in San Francisco, California. They were the parents of two children: Walter and Alice Belle, both born in San Francisco. (Walter Jr's. name was changed shortly after birth to George Donald).
In July of 1926 Walter and Julia were divorced in Spokane, Washington, and Julia raised the children on her own.
Walter was a dreamer and wanderer. He hunted for but never found lost gold mines and buried treasure. He claimed to have been a policeman, detective, carpenter, magician, salesman and carnival fire eater.
Walter thought it likely that he was related to the famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison, and this prompted him to change the spelling of his name to Edison. However, there is no connection between the Eidson's and the family of Thomas Edison.
Walter died from a stroke on April 3rd., 1954 in Santa Clara, California. His remains were cremated and sent to Fremont, Iowa where they were buried on the grave of his brother Henry in the Cedar Township Cemetery.

Addendum
Julia Marra was a "mail order bride". She answered a magazine add and corresponded with Walter by mail. They did not meet until they were to be married. This may be what brought Walter "west".About 1923 Walter moved his family to Spokane, Washington and this is where he and Julia were divorced in 1926. Julia's brother Jack sent her money and she moved to her brother's home on the "ranch" (orchard) outside of Occidental, California. George was left at the "ranch" while his mother, Julia, and his sister, Alice, moved to Occidental where Julia worked at a restaurant. She would return to the ranch every few weeks to see her son.
Julia later moved to Petaluma where she worked at a local creamery. She rented a house from William "Bill" Bryan and later was married to him. They were married nine years before they told George and Alice, since Alice didn't like Bill!
Bill was busy raising his own children and would "visit" Julia as time would permit. He could often hear little Alice throwing a tantrum as he walked up the street to Julia's house after Julia had told her that Bill was coming to visit.
Julia was Catholic, and since her church did not allow divorce, and especially not a second marriage, she was excommunicated. Julia was still allowed to attended services, but was not allowed to receive the sacraments. (Bill was also Catholic). As Julia lay on her death bed receiving the "last rights" was important to her, it was difficult to find a priest to perform this sacrament. It was Bill's daughter Fran who brought a priest to Julia bedside and she expired shortly there after. It was also Fran who, when Julia called for her daughter Alice, stood behind Julia and placing her arms around Julia said "I am right here mom".
Though they squabbled and bickered constantly Bill wept the night of Julia's funeral saying he could not live without her. Six months later he was once again by her side.
Walter was a dreamer, always looking for that lost pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He always had a scheme to get rich and though none of them ever came to be, he never lost faith. Not much of a husband, but he did have a big heart and was thrilled to be a grandfather. He often visited his grandchildren, truly loved them, and frequently brought them gifts.
At one time when his son, George, needed some money he had it special delivered the next day. (George had asked his mother for this money and though she had it, she refused). George repaid this "loan", but when he tried to pay the interest Walter refused. "It's been paid, son", is all he had to say.
Walter never remarried and spent his later years living alone in a trailer. On his death in 1954 his remains were cremated and sent home to Freemont, Ohio to be interned on the grave of his brother, Henry.
Walter married Julia Katherina Marra-4810 [scrapbook] daughter of John Battista Marra Sr. and Catherina "Kate" Maggini in 1917. The marriage ended in divorce. They were married in 1917 in San Francisco, California. Julia was born on 12 Jun 1891 in Bodega, California. She died on 27 Jun 1964 in Petaluma, California. She was buried on 30 Jun 1964 in Druid's Cemetery, Sonoma County, Bodega Township, Occidental, California. Julia resided in Petaluma, California.
Julia was the daughter of Battista and Catherine (Maggini) Marra, natives of Locarno, Switzerland. She had two sisters: Ida and Alice, and three brothers: Fred, Chuck, and Jack. Fred died at the age of eleven when his shotgun accidentally discharged while he was crossing a fence.
The Marra family came to this country before 1900 and settled in the farming communities north of San Francisco (Occidental, Sonoma County.) Julia remembered, as a young girl, seeing the distant smoke from the fire that destroyed San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906.
Julia was married to Walter Irvien Eidson in San Francisco in 1917. Their first child, Alice Belle, was born in May 1918. By the time their second child was born (in 1920) this marriage was in difficulty. This second child was a boy and Julia named him after his father, Walter Irvien. However, Walter was angery when he learned that his son had been given his name and planned to "sell" the child. Julia managed to keep the baby and changed his name to George Donald as suggested by her sister.
This marriage managed to last a few more years, but in 1926 Julia and Walter were divorced in Spokane, Washington. Julia returned to the farming area north of San Francisco where she was near her brothers and sisters and here, in Petaluma she found employment wrapping butter at a local dairy to support herself and children.
Julia later remarried, this time to William Thomas Bryan, who had also been previously married. William was the father of three children from his previous marriage. There were no children by Julia and William's second marriage but they did find happiness together.
William, or "Bill" as he was called, and Julia lived in Petaluma until Julia's death in June of 1964. William followed her in October of the same year.
From birth Julia was a devote member of the Catholic church and since this church did not approve of divorce, she was not allowed to participate in church ceremonies. This troubled Julia to her final day, and even then it was difficult for her daughter, Fran, to find a priest of the Catholic church who would perform the "last rights" and allow Julia to pass away in peace.

"Howard Station" was an early name for the community which is now Occidental. According to the 1877 Thompson Historical Atlas of Sonoma County: "This place (Occidental Post- Office) is on the narrow-gauge road where it crosses the divide, between the waters flowing into O'Farrell valley on the south side, and through Howard canyon into Russian river on the north side. The station is called Howard's station, after William Howard, who settled there in 1849, and is still a resident of the place. The town-site belongs partly to Mr. Howard and partly to the Meeker brothers. It is a place of recent grown, but already boasts of a post, express, and telegraph office, a good hotel, general store, blacksmith shop, church, etc. Unlike most towns in Sonoma, it is surrounded by forests, and the stump of a tree stands in the main street, out of which one hundred and twenty thousand shingles were made. . . The population of the place is about 50 souls."
