Green was a farmer during most of the year. He was employed by Morris Chambliss. During the spring he picked blackberries to sell in Chapman. What he couldn't sell was made into homemade wine. During the winter months when there was no farming, he chopped wood and dug stumps for John Aplin.
In the early 1940's, he had picked berries to make some of his wine. As was the custom, homemade wine had to cure for about 3-4 months. On this particular occasion, Green hid a gallon of his wine in one of the old hollowed out stumps on Mr. Aplin's place.
In the fall when he began cutting wood, he looked for his jug of wine, but he couldn't find it. It was found only after he began digging stumps in the late winter.
Green enjoyed fishing and playing a banjo. He was, for many years, the only left handed member of the family. He never remarried after Ella's death, but he was dedicated to his grandchildren. Each Saturday afternoon, provided they had all of their chores done, he walked with them to Lee Alexander's store near Chapman, Alabama. There he bought ready rolls and some Juicy Fruit chewing gun for the coming week. Each grandchild received a nichol soda water and their choice of a 5 cent candy bar, or a package of cinnamon rolls (6 per pkg). Along the route back home, they would stop and eat their treats in two nearby pastures, where they had a picnic.
On Saturday nights, Green would walk with his grandchildren to the home of J. C. Goram, his son-in-law who lived about a mile from their home. There they would sit with ears glued to the radio listening to the Grand Ole Opry from Nashville, Tennessee. When the program was over, he and his half asleep grandchildren would walk back home.
Green died in a Montgomery, Alabama hospital from a stroke. It was the first time he had ever been in a hospital.
Ella Lee Wilson McLain was the daughter of William David and Matilda Ann.
Green married Ella Lee Wilson daughter of William David Wilson and Eliza Ann Jordan on 8 May 1908.
