Walter was born at Rose Hill, Iowa on the 3rd. of December 1888. He attended the Tom Benton School near Fremont until the age of about ten. He explained his reason for leaving school in papers he wrote in 1935:

"I fainted one day and hit my head against a stove. Two hours after I come to and a doctor and 2-3 other men was holding me in bed and my left eye was turned up in my head caused by my hitting it on the stove in my fall and it took months for the doctor to bring my eye back straight and he forbid me to read or write, for a time, for if I did I would go blind in my left eye and maybe my right so this ended all of my schooling".

In 1917 Walter was married to Julia Marra in San Francisco, California. They were the parents of two children: Walter and Alice Belle, both born in San Francisco. (Walter Jr's. name was changed shortly after birth to George Donald).

In July of 1926 Walter and Julia were divorced and Julia raised the children on her own.

Walter was a dreamer and wanderer. He hunted for but never found lost gold mines and buried treasure. He claimed to have been a policeman, detective, carpenter, magician, salesman and carnival fire eater.

Walter thought it likely that he was related to the famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison, and this prompted him to change the spelling of his name to Edison. However, there is no connection between the Eidson's and the family of Thomas Edison.

Walter died from a stroke on April 3rd., 1954 in Santa Clara, California. His remains were cremated and sent to Fremont, Iowa where they were buried on the grave of his brother Henry in the Cedar Township Cemetery.

Addendum

Julia resided in Petaluma, California.

Julia was the daughter of Battista and Catherine (Maggini) Marra, natives of Locarno, Switzerland. She had two sisters: Ida and Alice, and three brothers: Fred, Chuck, and Jack. Fred died at the age of eleven when his shotgun accidentally discharged while he was crossing a fence.

The Marra family came to this country before 1900 and settled in the farming communities north of San Francisco (Occidental, Sonoma County.) Julia remembered, as a young girl, seeing the distant smoke from the fire that destroyed San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906.

Julia was married to Walter Irvien Eidson in San Francisco in 1917. Their first child, Alice Belle, was born in May 1918. By the time their second child was born (in 1920) this marriage was in difficulty. This second child was a boy and Julia named him after his father, Walter Irvien. However, Walter did not approve and this son's name was changed to George Donald as suggested by Julia's sister.

A few years later Julia returned to the farming area north of San Francisco where she was near her brothers and sisters. She found employment wrapping butter at a local dairy .

Julia later remarried, this time to William Thomas Bryan. William was the father of three children from his previous marriage. There were no children by Julia and William's second marriage.

William, or "Bill" as he was called, and Julia lived in Petaluma until Julia's death in June of 1964. William followed her in October of the same year.

"Howard Station" was an early name for the community which is now Occidental. According to the 1877 Thompson Historical Atlas of Sonoma County: "This place (Occidental Post- Office) is on the narrow-gauge road where it crosses the divide, between the waters flowing into O'Farrell valley on the south side, and through Howard canyon into Russian river on the north side. The station is called Howard's station, after William Howard, who settled there in 1849, and is still a resident of the place. The town-site belongs partly to Mr. Howard and partly to the Meeker brothers. It is a place of recent grown, but already boasts of a post, express, and telegraph office, a good hotel, general store, blacksmith shop, church, etc. Unlike most towns in Sonoma, it is surrounded by forests, and the stump of a tree stands in the main street, out of which one hundred and twenty thousand shingles were made. . . The population of the place is about 50 souls."
