Volume I, page 643, 644WILLIAM W. EIDSON, born September 1840 in Mississippi or Alabama. The 1880 census records that he was born in Alabama while the 1900 census records that he was born in Mississippi. The 1880 census is probably the one most likely given by William himself. If he was born in Mississippi he might be presumed to be the son of Rowland W. and Rebecca O'Neal Eidson. No evidence has been found to prove this relationship and Rowland was the only Eidson known to be living in Mississippi in 1840. Rowland married Rebecca in Ferry County, Alabama, in 1834, and was back in that County in 1850. One census places Rowland's birth in Alabama, another in Georgia, but there is little doubt that he was born in South Carolina. There were no Eidsons in Alabama as early as 1802.
William W. has not been located in an 1850 census. But, if he was born in Alabama, as a daughter declared in the 1910 census, then he was more likely the son of John Eidson who died in 1845. John's family was not found in the 1850 census in Alabama, although from military records it is known that they were there. Also, a number of his cousins and, by this calculation, his Uncle Edward, had migrated to the part of Texas where William lived. Additionally, William named his first son John E., which could have been after his father's name. In fact, some of his cousins moved on to Arkansas, a fact which may have influenced him to do the same.
In 1877 William W. was located in Gregg County, Texas, records. In 1880 he lived in Washington County, Texas, and his wife was Frances J., born January 1850 in Georgia. The family story is that Frances was a full-blood Indian. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Georgia. In the 1900 census they stated that they had been married 31 years, so they were married about 1869. Their first child was born in Texas in 1873. Their next child, according to her grandson, was born 1875 near Gladewater in Gregg County. In 1880 William was Superintendent of the Poor Farm in Brenham. Then Aug 19, 1881 he bought from Frank and Mary Meek of Burleson County, Texas (adjacent to Washington County) for $40 cash and four promissory notes due to be paid off 1 Jan 1886, a tract or parcel of land containing 95 acres in Burleson County, 23 miles from Caldwell. This land was surveyed in the name of James Buchanon adjacent to Moses Hughes, "being the land conveyed to me (Meek) by J.E. Foiler by a deed dated the 13th day of Nov 1875 and recorded in the land records of Burleson Co. on pages 36 & 37 of Book Q." (Burleson Co., TX, Deed Vol. T, pp. 957-958, 1881.) The following 19 Dec 1881 William and Frances sold this parcel of land in Burleson County to L.M. Maddox "all that certain tract or parcel of land situated and lying in said County of Burleson being a part of the James Buckhannon, original league and bounded as follows "..containing 95 acres of land for the sum of $225 and $65 was paid by cash in hand, and final payment to be made 1 Jan 1886--with 10% interest. (Burleson Co., TX, Deed Vol. U, pp. 486-487.) By this sale, and the birth of their next child in October 1883 in Arkansas, one concludes that they moved to Arkansas in 1882. In 1900 they lived in Lafayette County, Walker Creek Township. Then by 1910 most of the family had moved back to Gregg and Shelby Counties, Texas, and the family name was spelled Edson and Eddeson--which was later changed to Edison. A child was born to their son in Texas in 1901, so it is presumed that they probably all moved back about that time and that Fannie, called just Mrs. Edison, died February 1907 in Panola County, Texas, east of Carthage, where she had lived for about 15 days. Her newspaper obit did not list survivors and she was buried in the Old Campground Cemetery.(Obituaries Received in Panola Co., Texas 1873-1920, pub. by The East Texas Genea.) At least one of her daughters was living in Carthage. William, who was not in the 1910 census, must have died between 1900 and 1910--probably in Texas as some of the family believed. The name Panola is an Indian word for cotton and the county, on the Louisiana border, was organized in 1846 from Shelby and Harrison counties. All three counties were "home" to the descendants of Will and Fannie.
William married Frances Johnson "Fannie" about 1869. Frances was born in Jan 1850 in Georgia. She died in Feb 1907 in Panola County, Texas. She was buried in Old Campground Cemetery, Panola County, Texas.
