A. C. Eidson of Stanton, former Martin County judge and long time resident of West Texas, has the advantage of being able to recall early days in the settlements of this region from a triple viewpoint -- that of the pioneer school teacher, public official, and ranchman. He spent much of his early manhood near Sweetwater and taught in the schools of Taylor and Nolan counties but his initial appearance in the country west of the cap rock was in the summer of 1894. On August 25 of that year, he arrived in Garden City, Glasscock County, with his wife and two small sons, to take up his duties as teacher of the public school.
He got a stormy reception for as he recalls with laughter that he arrived at his new home in the midst of a howling sandstorm.
He was the second teacher in Glasscock County and when he took charge of the little one-room school it boasted an enrollment of 87 pupils. He taught there for three years, rounding out a dozen years of experience in the schoolroom, and then entered the second phase of his career -- ranching.
The Eidson ranch was located six miles nearly north of Garden City. He remained in Glasscock County until 1903 and during his residence served one term as deputy County and district clerk, thus entering his third realm of activity -- that of office holder.
In July 1903, Mr. Eidson, his wife, and their four children (two daughters had been born to the couple in Glasscock County) moved northwest into adjoining Martin County. Here they settled on what Mr. Eidson calls the "home place", a ranch 18 miles from Stanton where the family resided until 1917, when they moved to Oklahoma. A three year residence in the Boomer state was brought to an end by returning to Martin County in Dec. 1920. Mr. and Mrs. Eidson then leased a place and later bought the farm eight miles from Stanton which they still own.
Two terms as judge of Martin County completed the pioneer educator's record as a public officer.
It is in the field of education that Mr. Eidson has formulated an interesting and thought provoking philosophy. Wisdom garnered in his twelve years work as a teacher he passes on to his two daughters, Mrs. P. G. Smithson and Mrs. Harry Echols, who carry on the family's teaching tradition. Both young women have taught for six years in Glasscock County, where they have instructed some of the grandchildren of the men and women who were pupils of their father in the 1890's.
"It is not what you do and not what you say but how you do it and say it that brings pain or pleasure", Judge Eidson insists, recalling experiences from his years of teaching when diplomacy and courtesy smoothed over occurrences that might have brought serious
disturbances.Children, he believes, respond to the same treatment as adults and forced obedience is a sham.
He studied the nature of pupils and patrons. "You can't get along with pupils till you have contacted their parents", he said, showing that in his teaching in the early days he paralleled some pedagogical axioms being taught today. He made it a point to talk with parents This Information was Copied Without Permission From George Edison's Web Site At http://www.imt.net/~gedison/eidson/index.htm who had a reputation for being "toucherous" where their children were concerned, and only once in all his years of teaching had a parent come to see him in anger. The father in question soon went away, disarmed by Mr. Eidson's friendly and reasonable attitude.
"As Dr. Burleson of Bavlor fame said, in those days we kept school", the silver haired former instructor smiled. Corporal punishment or, in plain words, whipping was the accepted mode of discipline in those days and he employed it when necessary. But with more mature years and experience he has come to believe that whipping should be used only as a last resort in disciplining.
"With every pupil there is a better remedy than whipping if you knew it", is his challenging statement.
"In school I felt that I belonged to the community and not that the community was subject to me", he explained, voicing another theory in line with his present day lectures to teachers.
It is to his practice of the beliefs he formulated that Mr. Eidson attributed what he modestly describes as "the degree of success" he has had in handling children.
As to his personal feeling for his charges -- "I'd almost have died for one of my pupils", he said warmly.
Judge Eidson is a West Texan by education, at least, though born in Missouri and spending his childhood in that part of the state near what is now Willow Springs. In 1876, when he was 13 years old, he made the long wagon trip to Texas with his family. It took some 22 days to make the journey from the Missouri home to the new home near Pilot Point. The elder Eidson, who was a farmer, remained in Denton County about two years, then spent three years in what is now Mills County before the family moved to the Sweetwater country.
Mr. Eidson was educated in the Sweetwater schools and began his teaching career when he was 20 years old. After teaching a few terms, he went to Add-Ran college at Thorp Spring, spending the term of 1887 - 88 in that school. The college, named for it's founders, Addison and Randolph Clark, had at that time a student body of some 350 boys and girls.
After his college work, the young man returned to teaching. He taught three years in the Bluff Creek community and also at Lemon Gap which was later called Guton and at the Fish Creek school, later renamed Hylton. After his experience in Taylor and Nolan County schools, he accepted the position which brought him to Garden City.
At the old Fish Creek school he met Miss Lillie Campbell, a Texas born girl, daughter of native Texan parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Campbell. After an acquaintance of about two years, Miss Campbell and the young school teacher were married at the home of her parents on Sept. 8, 1891, the date being also the bridegrooms twenty-eighth birthday.
Five children were born to the couple of whom four, Boyce Eidson of Midland and Brick Eidson of Stanton, Mrs. Harry Echols of Glasscock County and Mrs. P. G. Smithson of Martin still survive.
Despite the fact that his age makes it necessary for him to spend most of his days at home, Mr. Eidson is interested in outside affairs. He is president of the Old Settlers association which will sponsor the eighth annual Old Settlers Reunion at Stanton July 13 and is keenly interested in plans for the affair, bringing a touch of authentic reminiscence anent the "good old days" to the committee meetings over which he presides.
