MARTHA JANE EIDSON, the youngest child of William and Martha Wilson Eidson, was b. 28 Mar 1832 in Hawkins Co., TN. She m. there in 1856 CALVIN CLAY HUNTER. From his obit. it is known that he was b. 4 May 1835 in Stanley Co., SC. He was believed to be the son of John and Hannah ROSS Hunter who were m. 31 Jan 1828 in Mecklenburg Co., NC. When c 20 yrs. old, Calvin moved to Hawkins Co., TN, where he met Martha Jane.

One family story is that Martha lived in Mulberry Gap (Eidson) during the C.W. with her four young sons. Her father, William, sent Calvin C. to military school when war seemed inevitable and thus enabled Calvin to enter the Confederate army as a Lt. He served in the 43rd Volunteers, was captured at Vicksburg, as was Martha's brother Larkin, and exchanged for Union prisoners. He was again captured nr Rogersville and sent this time, 1864, to Johnson's Isle on the Great Lakes; he was released two months later after the war ended.

Calvin and Martha moved north to Lee Co., VA, briefly and by 1870 they and five children were enumerated in the census in Warrensburg, MO. Two more children were born there, and in addition Martha raised her sister's dau., Cornelia Frost, from the age of 2 after "Nelia's" parents died. Calvin was a farmer and in the livery business.

Martha d. 1 Jul 1907 and was bur. in Warrensburg. One obit in the Knob Noster Star read:

"Mrs Calvin Hunter Dead"
"The Star regrets to chronicle the death of Mrs. Calvin C. Hunter, which occurred at the family residence early Monday morning. She was sick but two or three days and the direct cause is not exactly understood. Mrs. Hunter was in her 76th year, having been born in Hawkins Co., TN, 3-281832. Her maiden name was Martha J. Eidson and she was married to Calvin C. Hunter at her old home. During the trying scenes of the war when her husband was in the Condederate army, Mrs. Hunter kept the home together and looked after the welfare of the family, six sons and niece, all of whom survive her. 1 She was a most capable woman and was a true type of Southern womanhood. Her whole life was devoted to the cause of Christ and she will long be remembered as an ideal wife and mother and a good neighbor. Her worthy deeds will live after her. A husband, six sons and a niece, whom she reared, Mrs. Isom Burnett of North Dakota, mourn her death. The sons are all well known, being John W. Hunter of
Knob Noster, W.E. of Montana, Sam F., Warrensburg Hill, Knob Noster, R.W. of Fayetteville, Ark. and Chas. S. of Knob Noster. The Star extends condolences to the bereaved family. The funeral will be held at the Christian church Tuesday at 11 o'clock."
