WASHINGTON COUNTY.BIOGRAPHIES
History of Washington Counties, Arkansas.
Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889.William Harrison Eidson, another citizen whose name is synonymous with the farming interests of the county, is a son of William and Martha (Wilson) Eidson. The father was born in North Carolina about 1782, and the mother in Hawkins County, Tenn., being about eight years younger than her husband. When a young man the father immigrated to Tennessee, where he met and married Miss Wilson. They spent their lives on a farm in Hawkins County, Tenn., and both lived to be about seventy years of age. He was an old-time Democrat, and she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. They were the parents of eleven children, six sons and five daughters. The sixth child, William H. Eidson, was born in Hawkins County, Tenn., April 19, 1823, was reared on the farm and educated to a limited extent in the old subscription schools. At the age of nineteen he married Miss Susan Begley, a native of Hawkins County, Tenn., born November, 1822. Having farmed in that county until 1851 he moved to Washington County, Ark., located in the woods on the place where he now lives, and here first entered forty acres of land. Since then he has added thereto, and now has about 1,200 acres. To Mr. and Mrs. Eidson were born ten children: McCoy, John D., Henry, Mary J., Samuel L., William S., Martha E., Ellen C., George P. and Orlena B. The eldest two were killed at the battle of Vicksburg, while in service on the Confederate side. As a business man Mr. Eidson has been eminently successful, and is one of the largest land owners in the township. He has been a resident of this county for thirty- seven years, and has lived on his present property all that time. He is Democratic in his political views, was justice of the peace four years, and both he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Wm. H. received a land grant of 255 a. in Hawkins Co. 12 Feb 1842, (2) and bought land from his father in 1841 (3) and farmed there until he moved, in 1851, to Washington Co., AR. He homesteaded forty acres of land nr Springdale, AR, in the Zion community. He was one of the pioneers of that area, literally carving his home out of the wilderness, prospered, and accumulated land adjoining his homestead, owning at one time as many as 1200 acres.
Wm. H. was a Democrat in his political views and justice of the peace for four years. He and Susan were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. "Uncle Billy," as he was called, was one of the first trustees of Zion Methodist Church organized in 1850. The present building still stands with Home Coming Service once a year in Oct. Uncle Billy gave the land for the first part of Zion Cem. where Susan's was the first grave. She d. 15 Feb 1898. Her obit. read: Eidson, Mrs. Billy-Mrs. Eidson, wife of Uncle Billy Eidson, died Tuesday at her home near Zion, Southeast of Springdale, of apoplexy. The remains were buried Wednesday afternoon in the cemetery of Zion. Deceased was 76 years of age and a member of the South Methodist church. In 1873 Wm. H. filed a petition to the Commissioners of Claims amounting to $1,705.00 in goods taken from him by Gen. Curtis during the Civil War. Those items taken included 200+ bu. of corn, 1,000 Ibs. bacon, 2,000 Ibs. of pork, 3 mules, a horse and a mare. In order to file this claim he had to prove he had not intentionally helped the Confederacy (most likely untrue!).
Uncle Billy m. 2) Mrs. Augusta Nickerson in Oct 1903, who survived him when he died 25 Jun 1911 in Springdale. His obituary read: "W.H. or "UncleBilly" Eidson living a few miles southeast of Springdale, AR, in the vicinity of Zion, was stricken with apoplexy Friday afternoon about six o'clock from the effects of which he died Sunday afternoon about five o'clock Mr. Eidson had gone out into the garden to do some work, and after he had been out there some time his grandson, Ellis Eidson, who was working on the place, heard him making an unusual noise and ran to investigate and found him. With the help of Mrs. Eidson they got him to the house and summoned assistance. Although conscious the greater portion of the time, Mr. Eidson never spoke after being stricken.
"Funeral services were held at the Zion Church Monday afternoon at two o'clock, being conducted by Rev. Armstrong, and the remains were interred in the Zion cemetery. The services were largely attended, and it is doubtful if a funeral was ever held in that locality at which a larger number of members of the same family were present.
"Mr. and Mrs. Eidson were the parents of ten children, six sons and four daughters: McCoy, John, Henry, Mary, wife of Moses Anderson, Samuel L., William, Martha E. wife of M.C.
