Volume I, page 467Daughter EIDSON (possibly named MARY) of James and Mary "Polly" Humphrey(s) Eidson married L. JAMES SALTER by 1804, had six children, and had died by 1847 when her father's estate was
settled. The ages of her children would indicate that she was one of the older daughters of James and she named her two daughter's. Sarah and Mary so it seems likely that her name could have been Mary because it would have been most unlikely that James and Mary would NOT have named a daughter after the mother. And, since their daughter Sarah is known to have married James Rodgers, that leaves the possibility that Mary was the name of a daughter who married either Pennington Deloach, or James Salter. The latter, having a daughter Mary,
seems the more likely guess. The names of her children are found in the estates settlement of James, her father, including the fact that her daughter Sarah H. married William Rodgers. (l) It seems likely that the son called Samuel was the Lemuel Salter who was in the same Civil War unit
with Gideon and William. Sarah's children were:WILLIAM SALTER, killed in Civil War

SAMUEL SALTERSARAH H. SALTER, the daughter of L. James and (?Mary) Eidson Salter, was born about 1807 and married WILLIAM RODGERS, a farmer, born about 1807 He was the son of James Rodgers, born in North Carolina, who was a contemporary and often confused with the James Rodgers who married Sarah Eidson, a sister of Sarah's mother. The father of William Rodgers had two or three wives and died intestate in the late 1840's leaving 11 children: James, William, Luke, Talitha who married Uriah Hedge, Chesley, Rebecca Ann who married Seaborn Temples, Eliz. who married John Parrish, Catherine, Sophia, Drucilla, and Allen. (2) Possibly the two James Rodgers were related, but the relationship is unknown. Some of this family omitted the -d- in spelling their name. The children of William and Sarah were:

A Tribute to J.W. Eidson
by J. Russell Wright
"It has been said that the living should deal tenderly with the dead. Be that as it may, I feel moved to drop a flower and shed a tear on the bier of J.W. Eidson, who was born in Edgefield county in January, 1842, and died at his home in Trenton July 11th where he was buried in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. He joined the Baptist church at Rocky Creek when a young man.
"When the tocsin (sic) of war sounded in the sixties he was one of the first to volunteer in Co. G, 7th Regiment, in defence of the South that he loved so well, and was with the 1st Army Corps in Virginia. At the expiration of the first twelve months he was elected Second Lieutenant of his company and was in every battle that his regiment was engaged in, from Bull Run, July 21st 1861, to Sept. 20th, 1863. Gen. Longstreet was ordered from Virginia to Chickamonga to reinforce the Army of the West. This battle was fought on the 19th and 20th of September, 1868.
"His health gave way in April last, and from that time to the end he suffered a great deal, but he bore it all without a murmur. He knew that the end was fast approaching and gradually, as the fading twilight disappears from the summer sky, his noble spirit passed away. So that instead of saying "he is dead," the more appropriate would be, "He was not, for God took him.
"Mr. Eidson had no children but surely he was a father to the fatherless, as was manifested by him and his dear wife. How tenderly they looked after and cared for his dead brother's children for three or four years.
"Mr. Eidson was a friend without treachery and a soldier without cruelty. He was a public
officer without vice, a private citizen without wrong, a neighbor without reproach, a Christian without hypocricy and a man without guile. He was as gentle as a woman in life, modest and pure as a virgin in thought, watchful as a Roman vestal in duty, as submissive to law as Socrates and as cool in battle as Achilles.
"May his relatives and friends rejoice in the truth that he has crossed the river peacefully and is now resting on the other side with his comrades and loved ones."

Trenton Laments the Death of One of Her Best
"The announcemnt of the death of Mr. J.W. Eidson, at his home in Trenton, on Wed. evening
last, was not a great shock to his many friends for while they continued to hope and pray that he might entirely recover from his recent illness, still they feared that the end was inevitable.
"When the summons came, however, it brought none the less sadness and sorrow, that a
life so valuable was cut off. Mr. Eidson was a man of strong and original mind--a man of keen wit and humor--a man who did valiant service in the 'lost cause'--a man who loved and served his Maker--a good neighbnor, a kind friend. And apart from all this, he was more--a faithful, devoted, affectionate, gentle husband; and it will be in his home that he will be most sadly missed--by the loving and lonely wife who is bearing the terrible blow with Christian fortitude, and sits silently grieving for the 'touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is stilled.'
"His burial services were conducted by Rev. Graves Knight and Rev. Marvin Auld, after which his remains were laid to rest in Ebenezer cemetery. He has gone to his reward, and is now rejoicing in the bliss of a Savior's love. May his desolate and heartbroken wife and other relatives find comfort in 'Him who doeth all things well.' Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. Even so saith the spirit, for they rest from their labors and their works do follow them'John married Louisa Wright on 27 Dec 1870. 233. Edward Hitson-9E17 1 (Edward , Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born in 1792 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He died before 1850 in Randolph County, Georgia.
EDWARD EIDSON, JR., the son of Edward Eidson 8E2 and his wife, Delilah Watson Eidson, was b. c 1792 in Edgefield Co., SC. In the 1820 census he had two sons and one dau., all less than 10 years old, indicating that he had probably been m. six or eight years. The average age of marrying in that area seemed to have been about 20, so one might guess that he was c 28 years old--making his birth year about 1792. In 1830, the couple had apparently lost one son, but had added two daughters. By 1840 he and his family had moved to Randolph Co., AL, and his age, according to the census, was between 60-70. With the couple were five females from 10 to 20 years of age. In 1848 he was recorded in the deed roll as selling some property, but the name was rossed thru. As he was not in the 1850 census with his family, it is presumed that he died about that year. He m. GIOIA (?LYDIA)' b. c 1794 in SC. In 1850 she was living with Joseph and Susan Collins, Susan, age 20 and b. in SC, and thus presumed to be a dau. Also in the household was Mary Hitson, 16, b. in SC. Living nearby was the family of D. Harrell, no wife listed, but with them was Sarah Hitson, age 10., b. in GA. Riley Hitson, b. 1820 in SC, lived nearby, also in the 8th Dis. In the 1850 census Riley's last name was spelled "Hertison," but his name appeared in the 1848-9 tax Digest in Randolph Co. as Hitson., taxed for .59 for 1 poll and for no real estate.
Gidia's maiden name is unknown, but the name of her son makes the surname Riley suspect. However, several Riley wills in Edgefield Co. were examined and all failed to reveal a relationship. The descendancy from Edward's son Riley and his sisters is not as complete as one could hope for, due in part from the skepticism of some Hitsons about the change in the name. The children of Edward and Gidia were:
RILEY HITSON
DAU. HITSON b. c 1820-25 in SC.
DAU HITSON b. c 1820-25 in SC.
SUSAN HITSON
MARY HITSON
ELIZABETH HITSON b. c 1825-30 in SC. m. D. HARRELL with whose family Sarah Hitson was enumerated in 1850.
SARAH HITSON b. 1840 GA.
SON HITSON, b. c 1811; d. by 1830
Edward married Gidia in South Carolina. Gidia was born about 1794 in South Carolina.
They had the following children:
+ 769 M i William Riley Hitson Sr.-10E114 + 770 F ii Elizabeth Hitson-10E119 + 771 F iii Susan Hitson-10E117 + 772 F iv Mary Hitson-10E118 + 773 F v Sarah Hitson-10E120
234. Delilah Eidson-9E18 (Edward , Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born in 1794 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina. She died in 1874 in Marshall County, Alabama.
DELILAH EIDSON-HITSON, the dau. of Edward and Delilah Watson, was b. c 1794 in Edgefield Co., SC. At the time of her father's death in 1809, she had already m. 1) ABSOLEM SHIRLEY in Edgefield. Nothing is known of this marriage, not the time of Absolem's death, nor of any issue from the marriage. The name Absolem seems to have been a family name in the Shirley family and another (?) Absolem Shirley is mentioned in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy (1) as an heir to the estate of Bathsheba McGehee of Madison Co., VA, in a will recorded 10 Dec 1838, but recorded in Louisa Co. (2) No relationship to this family has been established. Absolem was apparently a good deal older than Delilah because he had leased 250 a. of land from Wm. Doby c 1785-90 in Edgefield Co. (3) The Absolem Shirley mentioned in the will of Bathsheba was her brother and had left three children: Alphand, Sarah, and Elizabeth J. No residence was given.
As the widow Shirley, Delilah m. 2) RUEBEN KIRKLAND, b. in Edgefield Co., SC, c 1800. They were probably m. in Bibb Co., GA. (4) This marriage is found in The Compendium of American Genealog and indexed Hitson. Rueben was the son of Rueben, Sr., b. c 1761, and Mary Clark Kirkland. Rueben, Sr., d. c 1840. The family was said to have moved to DeKalb Co., AL, but in 1850 Delilah Kirkland, a widow, was in Marshall Co., AL. Her youngest child was 6 and had been born in GA, so the family had moved from GA to AL between 1844 and 1850. A son, Bird Jackson, remembered that they lived in Groveoak, AL, which is in De Kalb Co., so the family moved there after 1850, and that was where Delilah died--date unk.
