JOSIAH PADGETT married MILLICENT "MILLY" EIDSON, daughter of Edward of South Carolina, and a sister to James, John, Edward, and Elizabeth. Josiah and Milly were the parents of Henry who married his first cousin Penelope, the daughter of John (she was not in Edward's estate settlement). Job Padgett was known to have a daughter named Hulda, and, with no other evidence to the contrary, she could have been the Hulda that married this John (the son of Edward Eidson IV.)

Other evidence that makes it seem likely that this John was Edward's son is found in a treasured letter written June 1964 by Mrs. Lula Padget of Saluda County, South Carolina. (Lula was age 8l years, 6 months and 29 days at the time). A partial transcript of what she wrote follows:

"I think, as I remember, that John Eidson was my mother-in-law's grandfather. Her name was Huldah and she married KINDRED HURT. He died in the Civil War, and I often heard them mention Jeff Padgett, but don't know what relation he was to them. My father-in-laws great grandfather was Samuel Padgett, and he was married to Polly Eidson. He called her high granny because she was tall.

"My father-in-law's grandfather name was Russel. Russel married Elizabeth Whittle--she died May 1902. My father-in-law and his wife, Henry and Elizabeth Hurt Padgett, died 1915 - he in February 3, and she June 2. My husband, John Jackson Padgett, was born in 1871 and died November 18, 1924. We were married (Lula Johnson and John Padgett) December 16, 1900.

"This is messed up but is what I know of the Padgetts and Eidsons - written by Mrs. Lula Johnson Padgett as best I understand this 19th day of June 1964."

Millicent married Josiah Padgett Sr. 1 son of William Padgett Sr. and Sarah Blitchenden about 1778. Josiah was born in 1755 in North Carolina. He died in 1811 in Edgefield, South Carolina. He was buried in Padget Family Cemetery, Edgefield County, South Carolina. Josiah served in the military Revolutionary War--Served in a Volunteer Company under Capt. William Butler during 1782..

They had the following children:

53. John Eidson Sr.-8E3 (Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born in 1764 in Virginia. He died after 1832 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. John served in the military During the Revolutionary War served in South Carolina Militia, Butler's Company.

John Eidson, the son of Edward Eidson of Edgefield County, South Carolina, was born by 1765 having been listed in the 1810 census as 45 and over. He married about 1785, Patience Watson, the daughter of Arthur Watson of Edgefield County. In the census of 1790 John ITson is shown to have one son and two daughters, which would indicate that they had then been married about 5 or 6 years. John served in the Revolutionary War in Butler's Co. of the South Carolina Militia and some of these records were filed under the name of EDson. In 1783 he, as John Etson, was issued a certificate for the sum of £26 sterling for Militia Duty as a Private. This was to be paid 13 Jul 1785, but he was to receive, on demand, £1 16 sh" and 4 pence being one year's interest. (Rev. War Acct. Audited of John Eidson, Reference SC Archives, AA 2176, Records of the Comptroller Gen., 4 1 4) Two years of this interest was received 10 Aug 1785 by Thomas Warren for John Edson. In Jan 1787 a third year's interest was received by Arthur Watson for discount in the part purchase of 682 acres of land. A document of this intent was signed , by John Eidson 16 Oct 1786--his being the same signature as that in the settlement of his brother's (Edward Jr.) estate, and that on a deposition in 1832.

The 7th of January 1788 John ITson received a State Grant of 180 acres in consideration of £11 4sh paid by John, the document having been certified 9 May 1787. This land was situated in the District of Ninety Six on Dry Creek waters of Mine Creek bounding n'ward on James Cox, S'ward on land held by Michael Watson, the other sides being vacant. ( NC Archives, State Grants, Vol. 23, p. 105.) John and Patience sold this property in 1795 to Edward Mc Carty. (Edgefield Co., SC, D. Bk. 14, pp. 258-260) The 4th Feb 1790, Richmond Watson, a brother to Patience, sold John a parcel of land containing 25 acres being part of the land originally granted ot Michael Watson. (Edgefield Co. D. Bk. 13, p. 165. ) The 10th Oct 1796 John bought, for £11 3sh 6p., about 100 acres of land from Patience' father, Arthur Watson, part of the original Robert Pringle grant. ( Edgefield Co. SC, D. Bk, 134, pp. 316-317) In 1798 John bought about 37 acres of land from one James Berry. This last transaction is interesting because for the first time the sale was for dollars --seventy --instead of pounds. ( Edgefield Co. SC, D. Bk. 51, pp. 189 and 190)

The Watson family was quite involved with the Eidson family as noted time and again in deeds and by marriages. Patience was one of the eight children of Arthur Watson whose will was probated 12 Sep 1806. His five sons were Hezekiah, Richmond, Abner, Arthur Price, and Absolom; two other daughters were Fanny Satcher and Lydia Warren. His father was John Watson whose will and estate were probated in 1788. John Watson was also the father of Capt. Michael Watson of note in the Revolution and owner of a large amount of property in this area. The other children of John and Ann Watson were sons Jacob, William, John, and Willis M., and daughters Charity Anderson, Ceale Watson, Martha Odum, and Lucretia Jones.

Neither the date of death nor any estate settlement has been found for this John Eidson, so determining the family he left is quite difficult and involves educated guessing and the process of elimination. Padget Family data was given to Eidson researchers in 1957 by Mrs. Ruth Padget Bible (born 1892) of 806 W. Pine St., Johnson City, TN. (Mrs. Bible, nee Ruth Paget, was the dau. of Marion and Florence Durham Paget, the g'dau. of Manchester and Sarah Corley Paget, and the g'g'dau. of Josiah Jr; and Sallie Watson Paget.) Mrs Bible provided the following statement she said was given to her by an aged cousin who had at that time passed away 25 years ago:

"The first Josiah Paget served in the Rev. War. He died in 1811 and his son Henry Paget administered on his estate. We do not know whom, when nor where he married. Sallie Paget Carson thinks his--Josiah's--wife must have been an Eidson, because the old folks always said that her father (Sallie's) took after his Uncle John Eidson, and the Eidsons were big men. And Josiah Paget had two sons to marry Eidson sisters, and it was always understood that the boys married their first cousins." Therefore early researchers concluded that Penelope Eidson who married Henry Padget, and Polly (?Mary) Eidson who married Samuel Padget, brothers, were the daughters of John and Patience Eidson because they were not the daughters of James and Edward had no daughter Penelope. Benjamine Josiah Padget and Woodrow Wilson Padget of Saluda County wrote in The Family History of Saluda Co. in 1980: "It is thought that his (Josiah's) wife was a Miss Eidson or a Miss Lumpkin. However, these might have been his wives by two marriages." Tradition in the Eidson family insists that Milly, the wife of Josiah Padget, Sr., was an Eidson and their associations seem to confirm this. The only other document found to date about the children of John and Patience is a deed made 5 Feb 1825 by John Eidson, Jr. in which he sells to Henry Padget (who m. Penelope Eidson) his ONE SEVENTH part of a 400 acre tract on Cloud's Creek "known by the name of Edward Eidson's old Mill tract." From this we assume that there were seven heirs to the John Eidson property and that John was a brother to Penelope and therefore the son of John, Sr. John's brother, Edward, had only five heirs--or six including his wife. The last document found in Edgefield was one signed by John Eidson, Sr., 14 Jul 1832, in reference to the estate of Absolom Watson; the signature matches the one he signed in the settlement of the estate of his brother Edward. It has also been assumed, and data seems to confirm, that this son John was preparing to leave Edgefield. The rest of this family has been assumed from data found in censuses and in other counties and states and by the process of elimination since we do know the names and approximate ages of the children of James and Edward. Therefore, any Eidson born in South Carolina before 1800 who cannot be accounted for, was, in all likelyhood, is a child of John as there were no other Eidson families in the state. (The presence in South Carolina of a few EDsons and one EDison have been checked, and they were from New England families) The children of John and Patience, most of whom went to Alabama, thusly determined, were: John Jr., Penelope, James, William, and Samuel

John married Patience “Lydia” Watson daughter of Arthur Watson Sr. and Ann Corley in 1780. Patience was born about 1765 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She died after 1850 in Barbour County, Alabama.

54. James Eidson Sr.-8E1 1 (Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born after 1765 in Virginia. He died in Jan 1846 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. James served in the military Enlisted in South Carolina Volunteers from Edgefield, County, South Carolina. Served as a private in Capt. Watson's Com in 1777.

James Eidson married, about 1781/2, Mary "Polly" Humphrey, the daughter of William and Ann Humphrey. According to the Minutes of the County Court 1785-1795, William and Samuel Humphreys were the early settlers of Edgefield County. The 1763 Tithables of "burned" Hanover County, Virginia, where Edward Eidson, Jr. was living at one time, lists David, Edmund, Edward, and Samuel Humphreys. Possibly the families knew each other in Virginia. William died in 1796. Tradition is that Ann was a Rowland/Roland and this name appears in the Humphrey family and repeatedly in this Eidson family. In the 1790 census, James Eidson had 3 white males -16, 4 females (including his wife) and no slaves. He married a second wife before 1815, probably by 1813.

James married (1) Mary Humphreys "Polly" daughter of William Humphreys Sr. and Nancy Ann Satcher in 1781. Mary was born before 1765 in Edgefield, South Carolina. She died about 1810 in Edgefield, South Carolina.

They had the following children:

+ 216 M i John Eidson-9E1
217 F ii Massey Eidson-9E2 was born about 1784 in South Carolina. She died after 1869.
+ 218 F iii Sarah Eidson-9E3

James married (2) Leodocia Blakeley "Dicey" daughter of Dionesius Blakeley and Fanny about 1814. Leodocia was born about 1793 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She died after 1820.

They had the following children:

+ 227 F xii Harriett Eidson-9E13
+ 228 M xiii Martin Eidson-9E14
+ 229 M xiv Edward Eidson-9E15
+ 230 M xv Humphrey Eidson-9E16

55. Edward Eidson IV-8E2 (Edward , Edward , Edward ) was born about 1768 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina. He died in 1809 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was buried in South Carolina.

EDWARD EIDSON, the son of Edward and (unk) Eidson of Edgefield Co., SC, was married between 1775-1780 because the 1790 census lists him as Edward ITson with 3 W M -16 and with 4 W F--indicating 4 sons and 3 daus.-- and probably, with 6 children, married at least ten years, so if he was m. by age 20, this would indicate that he was b. at least by 1760 at which time the family was probably still in ,VA. His "name was omitted in the 1800 census and he died .in 1809. He m. DELILAH WATSON (1) whose parentage Is unknown at present. The 27 Jul 1793 Edward Edson (sic) bought 100 a. of land from Wm. and Sarah Holson/Holstun for £40 lawful money. The land was situated "in Edgefield ; Co. on Clouds Creek waters of Little Saluda being ,part of a larger tract of two hundred acres originally granted to Elijah Padget in 1773 and 'recorded in Grant Book No. 12 p. 44." (2) Witnesses were Josiah Padget and Moses Holston

Little more Is known about Edward until his death in 1809 and his estate appraisal authorization dated 30 Jan 1810 was ordered by Elijah Watson, Justice, who named Thomas Warren, Dionyseus Blakeley and John Eidson as appraisers. (3) As can be noted in the copy of the settlement, one of the most interesting things about the document is the various spellings of the Eidson name and the settlement in the name of Edward HITson. In one place Edward Eidson was changed to Hitson. It also contains the signatures of Elijah Watson (who may have been related to Delilah), Dionyseus Blakeley and John Eidson,Sr. Thos. Warren signed with his mark. Administrators of the estate, not completed until 1818, were Henry Hitson and Henry Pagget (sic). Thus it was that when two sons of Edward--Edward and Henry-moved to GA they kept the spelling Hitson and , thereby created the irony that the direct line of Edward, Edward, Edward, Edward, and Edward was changed to Hitson.

The children named in the estate of Edward and Delilah were Edward Jr., Henry, John, Hulda, and Mary. Mary is believed to have m. Samuel Padgett after 1816, although early researchers presumed that the Mary who m. Samuel was a sister to Penelope, the dau. of John, whose children are named by the process of elimination-with the exception of a possible "Mary." Samuel was the son of Josiah and Milly Eidson Padgett. Further reasons for believing Edward's Mary m. Samuel may be found In the family of Milly Eidson. (4)

Edward's estate account included:

58. Joseph E. Eidson-8E11/1104 (Henry , Edward , Edward ) was born about 1771 in Campbell County, Virginia. He died in 1858 in Iredell County, North Carolina.

Joseph Eidson was born about 1771 in Campbell County, Virginia. Colonial Papers, (Colonial Papers, Vol. Cp. 604) have him as Joseph Edison #50, a Private in a list sent to the Governor by Thomas Newton, Jr. for the Militia payroll. He had served as a guard over the Public Arsenal at New London, a post town in Campbell County, Virginia, 133 miles west and south of Richmond. His name was also found on the Bedford County, Virginia, tax rolls in 1800. He appears to have gone to Iredell County, North Carolina, soon after that. He married in 1804/5, most likely in Iredell County, Milly J. Claywell, the daughter of Peter (Will of Peter Claywell, Iredell County, South Carolina, Will Bookk. II, page 245, names this daughter Milly Eidson) and Jemima Arthur Claywell. Peter Claywell, Sr., who was said to have moved into the Snow Creek community from Virginia in 1800 at the time of the Great Revival of the 1800's which helped hasten the establishment of Methodism in Snow Creek. Before a church was built, Methodist groups were meeting in the Claywell, Cowan, Lawrence and Sharpe homes. In 1801 Phillip Bruce had organized a Methodist Society of about 50 members at the home of Squire Sharpe. This became the congregation of King's Methodist Episcopal Church which was built on land adjoining the cemetery (which was already established.) Under the leadership of Richard Hugg King and Peter Claywell, the church grew into a strong congregation with the largest membership in North Iredell. Camp meetings were held annually on the third Sunday in August. At one time there were approximately three hundred tents and more than a thousand in attendance. This became the Snow Creek Church and was the atmosphere into which Joseph and Milly Claywell Eidson were married. (The History of Iredell County, North Carolina, page 135.)

By 1810 Joseph and Milly had two daughters and a son. Joseph enlisted in the 7th Regiment, Pearson's North Carolina Militia, for the War of 1812. (Microfilm: U.S. National Archives & Record Center, Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers from NC. F.6.5P.) He enlisted in October 1813 for six months and honorably discharged 7 September 1814. The 23 March 1955, at age 83, he applied for the first time for bounty land under the Act passed 28 September 1850. In 1837 Joseph was taxed $1.28 on 400 acres of land valued at $800.00 (Iredell County, North Carolina, list of taxables 1837-1842) taxes were up in 1838 and on the same property he was taxed $1.93. In 1842 he was taxed $2.28 on the same 300 acres now valued at $500 and for one black. In 1850 Joseph was a farmer in the Liberty Hill community and had acquired a 700 acre farm. There were 604 families in Iredell County in 1850 who owned slaves. Joseph Eidson, who owned Powder Springs, had only one. When Milly's father died, she received, from him a black named Peter. Two of Joseph's brothers, Barnabus Arthur and Edward, moved to Iredell about the same time that Joseph did. Edward remained in Iredell, but Barnabus moved west into Ohio about 1843, leaving behind some of his grown children. Milly was the granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Francis who died in 1816.
