AN OBSERVATION...

I am not a doctor. I am a piano teacher, a telephone operator...and a writer...and have lived life with the controls set on fast forward. However, one period in my life had me laid low for several years. Severe illness set in. I could bore you with all the "otis" and "itis" of the matter, but suffice to say, I am writing this...

The pathway to good health required much internal "restructuring." When a major organ, such as the large intestine, is removed, the digestive system is greatly shortened. Therefore, logically, there is less time for what one eats to get from point A, the mouth, to point B, the ileostomy. This necessitates that what one eats make the trip smoothly and quickly, without hanging up along the way, i.e. a blockage.

In my experience, the lower fiber, lower simple sugar, lower carbohydrate food plan has been a God-send. It has enabled me to eat well, grow thinner, keep the weight off a weakened part of my body, most importantly of all, stay out of the hospital to a much larger degree than in the past. Blockages will happen from time to time, as anyone who lives with this condition knows. However, I remain firmly convinced that the lower and water soluable aspect of this food plan has benefited me tremendously. Not as a doctor, but as one who has "tried them all," I believe this is a valid good plan that enables me to live comfortably with this condition.

While I am not diabetic, I have several friends who are. They tell me that this food plan is good for the diabetic and several of them follow this plan. These recipes have no added sugar and very little natural sugar. A lower ingested carbohydrate level results in a lower level of sugar to be metabolized.

Whether you are following a lower carbohydrate or lower sugar food plan, these recipes fit the bill! ENJOY!
