I just read the article in ESPN magazine.
I remember when aluminum bats were introduced....played with them back in 1976 and 1977 in high school.
We had access to wood bats, but everyone felt the aluminum bats had advantages.
I played American Legion and have coached American Legion.
The bat issue was always in the back of my mind.
Kids are bigger and stronger, 90 miles an hour fastballs from high schoolers and with this technology in their hands, it's a risk that warrants attention.
And, It's so obvious now....with the technology and bounce of these newer bats. It's time for the bat manufacturers and the league associations and NCAA to do something about this.....and regulate these bats or provide some kind of protection to the pitchers and infielders. You know, I wonder how many kids are leaving baseball because of the safety issue. Based on what I hear, the number of participants have dropped in little leagues. I'm sure there's a correlation.
I have 2 young boys that are very interested in playing baseball just like their dad. My oldest will play t-ball next year.
I'm very concerned to the point of perhaps guiding him to a safer sport when he gets older.
I'd love to see the ESPN article...so if you know of a rebroadcast time, please email me.
Thanks, Paul
