This week's email is from Frank Rutherford in Helena Montana. This was in the Reader's Alley in the Helena Independent Record on April 24th, 2005.
I've been a registered voter for 54 years and I've come to the conclusion that our electoral system just doesn't work the way it is supposed to. I've always voted for a candidate because I agree with his/her stand on the important issues and because I believe that person will vote his/her conscience on issues I haven't heard discussed. I have never voted a party line. It thoroughly disgusts me to read that two members of the House Business and Labor Committee apologized that they voted against a bill that would have outlawed metal bats in Legion baseball because they couldn't vote against the party. Not that they thought the bats were safe! Not that they thought their constituents were in favor of the bats!
Where, in the name of god, do politicians in both parties deposit their consciences and replace them with partisan policies while in office? Aren't our elected representatives supposed to represent us and not some amorphous, do-or-die, dogmatic, power-hungry party?
