What does "BESR" mean?

BESR stands for "Ball Exit Speed Ratio".

BESR testing involves swinging a bat at a standard velocity, and hitting a standard baseball that is also traveling at a standard velocity. The speed of the ball hit off the bat surface cannot exceed a specified speed, which is approximately 97 mph.

The BESR can only be +/-3. This means the weight of the bat cannot be more or less the 3 oz of the bat length in inches. Example, bat length 30" can only be 27oz. The lighter the bat, the faster the bat speed.

This testing was supposed to level the playing field with the wooden bats vs. the aluminum bats. It didn't in our opinion...

This is the "National Collegiate Athletic Association Provisional Standard For Testing Baseball Bat Performance" letter dated September 27th, 1999.
