Fishing
Report For Sunday June 16, 2002
BIGHORN RIVER
The water levels on the Bighorn are about 1500cfs. The fishing lately has picked up extensively, with baetis and midges being the dries of choice. Use Griffith's Gnats in 18-20 and parachute adams and thorax baetis in 18-20 for the baetis hatch. We been doing lot's of sight fishing with nymphs too! The Ray Charles and standard sow bugs have been working well. We've also been using lots of midge nymphs. Use disco, black, and black or natural flashback pheasant tail nymhs in 16-20. Next up....PMD hatch.
YELLOWSTONE RIVER & SPRING CREEKS
The spring creeks have
been fishing well lately. Use midges such as brassies and Disco midges
in 16-20 for sunny days. The venerable San Juan worm in orange and red
also works well. Flashback scuds and sowbugs in #14-#18 are also something
to bring along. The Yellowstone is currently flooding as it does every
year, but will be coming down for some great fishing.
GALLATIN RIVER
The Gallatin is experiencing runoff conditions.
BIGHOLE RIVER
Fishing has been very good on nymphs and attractor dries. Streamers on cloudy days including the venerable yellow yum yums have been working well. Caddis have been very good in the evenings.
MADISON RIVER (Upper and Lower)
Both stretches have
been fishing well. The upper river is just coming off runoff conditions
and will be seeing the salmonflies very soon. This is my favorite time
of year for the Madison especially for the big boys....Nymphs of all sorts
including those that match the stonefly nymphs have been producing well.
AREA LAKES
Ice is off almost
all the lakes except those over 8000 feet in elevation. We've been fishing
lots of lakes with some of the runoff conditions. Some have been very good
and some very slow. Just about time for some very good dry damsel fly fishing
in some of the trohpy lakes near Bozeman.
