Silly Stuff

There was a lot of discussion about Dream Roses at the Gardenweb Rose Forum a couple years ago and most of the comments were negative. The few with good luck with them were in CA I believe. We got Dream Yellow in 2000 and I was going to see if it lived up to its advertising claims... no spraying, no winter protection, etc, no tlc at all. That was the plan.... It soon was covered with powdery mildew and Deb asked me to spray it. She felt sorry for the pitiful thing. Canes wouldn't stand and Deb put a little trellis in front of it so the alyssum wouldn't cover it. When I didn't mound soil & mulch on it that winter, Deb said "you know it won't survive". She looked so sad I went ahead and protected the pitiful thing. Nightmare Yellow almost didn't survive even with protection. Second year was pretty much a repeat of the first on the wretched thing... The third year it actually had canes that would stand without support. Deb is a garden sorceress like I've never seen before and all her spells don't help NY. We did get one decent bloom in 4 years. A couple hours later it was blown. I don't trust any nursery that sells these roses with the claims used by these people.
