Hybrid Tea 1977 Swim & Ellis
Red blend - 35 petals
ARS rating 8.7
Verdict: Excellent rose. We have 2 and would have more if we had room in the yard.
Acquired: 1998 & 2000
Brand:
Bush
Growth habit : Bush gets about 4 ft tall x 3 ft wide. Foliage is almost thick but reacts badly to the fungicide Daconil.
Leaves:
Disease Resistance: We don't have much of a problem with blackspot here. Powdery mildew is the worst problem when we have cool nights and I try to spray fungicide every 2 to 3 weeks. DD will get powdery mildew in spring and fall when cool nights are normal.
Hardiness: One of our hardier hybrid teas, it should still be protected with at least some mulch piled at the base.
Blooms
Fragrance: Strong - almost too sweet for my tastes but Deb loves it.
Flushes: Good sized (25 to 35 blooms)
Repeat: Good turnaround time (5 to 6 weeks)
Vase life: Good - a week+
Silly Stuff
Once upon a time.... I only liked red and white roses. The 2 colors together on one bloom seemed gaudy and not very attractive to me though. For that reason, I never got DD despite its reputation as a stinker. Deb took the bull by the horns and had one waiting for me to plant when I got home from work one day. DD made it onto my favorite 5 roses list within a couple years.
