Hybrid Tea 1935 Kordes
Dark red 30 to 35 petals
Katherine Kordes seedling x W. E. Chapin
ARS rating 6.8
Verdict: Excellent!! What did you think I was going say about the best rose in the world? One of the hardest roses to get a good photo of too.
Acquired: (3) Approx. 1980 (Deb's grandma planted it) 1995 & 1997
Brand:
Bush
Growth habit : 3 to 4 ft tall x 3 ft wide - steady growth - is usually a week later than the earliest starters to show new growth.
Leaves:
Disease Resistance: Blackspot is only a problem here on stressed plants. Powdery mildew is the main problem and I try to spray the roses that get pm with fungicide every 2 weeks or so when we have cool, dry nights. CG will get pm if not sprayed here. Not a pm magnet but it will show up and the bush has gotten pretty well covered when I was lazy.
Hardiness: Good - Grandma Ethel's CG did nicely here with no protection for at least 15 years.
Blooms
Fragrance: Incredible! Fantastic! Intoxicating!
Flushes: Good - 20 to 30
Repeat: Good - 5 to 6 weeks
Vase life: Decent - about 5 days - many blooms have weak necks and won't stand upright. Stems are usually shorter than the long stemmed beauties.... Deb still cuts lots of them since she knows I love that fragrance :)
Silly Stuff
Though I admit to being a bit biased about Crimson Glory... I feel it is one of the pivotal roses in the development of modern hybrid tea roses. At least as important as Peace and more important to me because of all the stinkers that are descended from CG (most of them through Charlotte Armstrong, another great unsung rose).
