Description

Verdict: Good garden rose - Blue Girl was the first of Deb's beloved mauve/lavender thangs.

Acquired: 1995

Brand:

Bush

Growth habit : 6 to 7 ft tall x 3 to 4 ft wide - a lanky rascal I'm glad is parked next to the house.

Leaves:

Disease Resistance: Blackspot is only a problem here on stressed plants. Powdery mildew is the main problem and I try to spray the roses that get pm with fungicide every 2 weeks or so when we have cool, dry nights. BG will get pm if not sprayed here. Not a pm magnet but it will show up.

Hardiness: Much better than I expected - BG survived a couple winters without protection. It is planted beneath the eaves and doesn't get the snow cover most of the roses get too. Should have known it would be a tough critter when I told Deb it wouldn't survive the first winter.

Blooms

Fragrance: Moderate to a little stronger

Flushes: Decent - 15 to 25 - bloom form is a little loose on most blooms

Repeat: Average - about 6 weeks - a bit slower in cool weather - always a little later than most to get growing in spring.

Vase life: Fair - a few days

Silly Stuff

Once upon a time.... I did not like mauve roses. The color just didn't look right to me. I came home from work one day and Deb had this Blue Girl thing sitting next to the driveway. BG had a few blooms on it and she just loved them. I warned her. The silly thing would never survive the winters here and look at the color! She gave me the sad eyes look I can never resist and I asked where she wanted the thang planted. BG became 'the mauve/lavender thang'. Lo and behold, BG was alive and kicking the next spring. There was also another mauve/lavender thang next to the driveway one day, Heirloom. This was getting ridiculous. Another less forceful warning that it would be dead the next spring and another thang went in the ground. The tale continues on the Heirloom page *heavy sigh*.
