How do you tell what your current version is? Most software will have an "about" option, usually found in the right upper corner of the software window or in the "help" section.
Another change is the settings boxes where you enter your pop account and settings preferences. Instead of two boxes, they are split into several different categories.
With Eudora 1.52, the file that executes the email program is now eudora.exe instead of weudora.exe. So in program manager, find the eudora icon and click the icon once so it is highlighted but not activated. Hit alt-enter keys to get "Properties" for the icon. Edit the command line by removing the "w" on weudora. The icon will now work for the new Eudora.
Another Eudora trick you can use will keep your old email intact in the "in" and "out" mailboxes. Before deleting your old eudora files, move the in.mbx, in.toc, out.mbx, and out.toc files to another directory or a diskette. After loading the new Eudora shareware, copy those stored files into the C:\inet\eudora directory, overwritting the new files.
Be sure to reconfigure your settings under Specials and then settings. Your POP account is your email address (i.e. johndoe@imt.net) and the SMTP server is imt.net.
In addition Netscape continues to add functions on their software to allow it to become the only software you would need to navigate through the Internet. This new version has Usenet reading capabilities. In some ways it is an improvement. Usenet posts come with with hypertext links anytime a URL is referenced. Its a merging of Usenet and the Web.
Netscape 3.0 features more email functions whereas previous versions only had simple outgoing mail abilities. Whether it can replace Eudora is yet to be seen. Although I really like the new versions of Netscape, they have their own problems. Like most other software, they keep getting bigger and require more random access memory (RAM). Netscape recommends 8 mb RAM for these upgrades and I would have to agree. They will work on 4 mb RAM but it will be slower to open.
The new Netscape 3.0 is available in a +3 megabyte. The link below will allow you to download a copy from our server.
When Netscape asks you how to handle the file, select "save to disk". The next prompt will allow you to select the download path. Since the file is over 3 megabytes, the process may take some thirty to forty minutes depending on your modem speed.
Once the file is downloaded, you can exit out of Netscape, log off with Trumpet Winsock, and return to File Manager.
The first step involves extracting the new Netscape program. Use the Windows file manager (located in Program Manager in the Main group icon). Extract Netscape by locating the file and double clicking the file name. It will self extract and install the files. But first, you may want to save your bookmarks. Either relocate or save on a disk the file bookmark.htm located in the C:/inet/netscape directory.
When you double click the filename n16e30.exe, a box will appear that will ask you where to extract the files. For Internet Montana users, select (type in) C:/inet/netscape.
If all goes well, Netscape will automatically install in the directory and update your icon. Then all that is left is configuring the new software and removing the old Netscape icon in a process described below.
Under General Preferences, click on the Appearance tab. If you want IMT's homepage or a blank screen when you open Netscape, instead of Netscape's homepage, change the "browser starts with" box to IMT's homepage - http://www.imt.net
Under Mail and News preferences, you need to configure settings under both the "Identity" and "Server" tabs. Under "servers", the SMTP and POP servers are - imt.net
Your POP3 username is the first part of your email address (minus the @imt.net). The NNTP server is - news.imt.net
Under the identity tab, you need to enter your name and email address.
