Mac Software Additions

Netscape 2.02 - this upgrade provides new improvements over the shareware provided by Internet Montana (v1.1). More colors, including colored backgrounds, can be viewed with this version. Usenet capabilities and email also show promise, most notably with hypertext links included on many usenet postings or email. If you want to try this new version, a link is provided below.

Download Netscape 3.0 This link will allow you to download version 2.02 from Netscape but it can be very slow.

NewsWatcher - a fully functional newsreader is now provided for MAC users as an alternative to Netscape. The biggest advantage to a separate newsreader is the ability to display and select all the available newsgroups while accessing Usenet. Another advantage is the ability to download messages and decode pictures or other files from various newsgroups. For new users, be sure to configure the software. The news server for Internet Montana is news.imt.net. The mail server is imt.net.

To understand how to use this software, a help file can be downloaded hrough a hypertext link provided. For those without this software, a download link is provided.

Anarchie - Shortly after we provided this software, I found out from a user that the correct pronunciation for this software is the same as the word anarchy. Although I recommend Fetch as a good simple FTP (file transfer protocol) program, Anarchie is a more powerful program for FTP as well as for Archie (the mechanism to search for files across the Internet). Anarchie even comes with a large list of FTP sites already included.

Turbogopher -The beauty of Turbogopher is that right after I installed the new MAC software package on the Macintosh at work, Turbogopher would not work. It said I needed thread manager. So to help those who encounter the same problem, I am providing a link to thread manager below. Download the file, move it into the extensions folder, and then reboot the computer. Then you can access Turbogopher. Turbogopher is another means of obtaining files, similar to file transfer protocol (FTP) but with easier to follow "go fer" menus.

NCSA Telnet - This software is now included in the Internet Montana software package and was discussed in the original Internet Guide. This software is essential for accessing many libraries and bulletin board systems. So if you don't have it, download it below.

Download NCSA Telnet 2.6

Ircle 2.1- this software is for accessing the IRC chat areas of the Internet. My knowledge of this part of the Internet is weak. This may be related to my poor typing skills. In chat, you can have real time conversations with other people through your keyboard. But if you type like I do, it can be slow and even decipherable. Still, some links below can give you some good starter guidance.

Ircle Home Page The developers of this software provide everything you need to get started including information on their software and how to get in to chat rooms. The latest version of Ircle is also available.

Download Ircle 2.1 Another link in case you want to go direct or the software is not immediately available from the homepage site above.

Fetch - this software was not part of IMT's software, probably because the FTP functions can be handled by Anarchie. I include it here because I use it all the time for FTP transfers. I like it because of its simplicity. Unlike other software, I can operate Fetch even before I have consumed my first pot of coffee in the morning. Plus while it is operating, the cursor turns into a small running dog icon that is entertaining on its own.

MAC RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET

In my journeys on the web, I have found many sites specializing in Macintoshes, including lots of software and help guides. Many of them provide the same software I reference above.

I have also come across lists of sites, some of which I have yet to check out. So I am providing another page listing these sites. If you know of other sites that would appeal to the Macintosh user, a comment link is provided there.
