Crown Butte 1995

Most of the gold mining has been done on the face of Henderson Mountain (above). Crown Butte smoothed this area out during reclamation work a few years ago. Prior to that, there were many areas of sitting water, pools of orangish, acidic runoff.

Glengarry Adit, an old mine opening, continues to a major contributor to the pollution entering Fisher Creek. The orange discoloration is an indication of the acidic water that contains large quantities of dissolved heavy metals.

A look at the Fisher Creek drainage from above. A spoils pile and Glengarry Adit are in the lower right hand corner (adit can't be seen in this phot though).

A look at some of the reclamation work at Crown Butte. There are several experimental plots in which scientists are trying to determine the best way to revegetate the high altitude spoils piles.
