Two gold mines have been operated just outside of Yellowstone National Park during this century. Crown Butte's New World Mine has received the most publicity during the past several years. This area just northeast of Yellowstone Park has seen some reclamation work in the past several years while Crown Butte attempted to re-start gold mining on Henderson Mountain.
The Mineral Hill Mine has been operating off and on just north of Gardiner, just a few miles from the northwest entrance of Yellowstone National Park. A small mine, they managed to run an environmentally responsible operation and earn the respect of the community. Although the mine did not generate as high of acidic spoils as Crown Butte did, they used cyanide in their mining process.
