Windows95 Dial-up Scripting Page

Windows95 users at Internet Montana can automate their login to the system by utilizing a script. This page is designed to provide the tools to complete that process.

Although we can provide the script necessary for the log-on process, the Microsoft Dial-up scripting tool is necessary. To see if it is installed, press the START button, then Programs, and then Accessories. If you do not see the Dial-Up Scripting Tool you will need to install it.

If you do not have the CD version of Windows95, you can get the program from Internet Montana with this link - Dial-Up Scripting Tool.

If you download this file, transfer it to a floppy disk. The file will need to be expanded by using File=>Run and typing in A:\dscrpt.exe
If you have Internet Montana's Windows95 installation disk, this has already been done.

Then go to Control Panel, double click the Add/Remove Programs icon, and then go to the Windows Setup. Select "Have disk". On the Windows95 CD, type in the path to the dscrpt.exe program. The path would be D:\Admin\Apptools\Dscript assuming the CD-ROM drive is D:. A checkbox should appear that will allow you to select the dialup scripting tool for installation.

You also need the log-in script (its included in the download version). And the script required is dependant on which area you are accessing our service from. Both scripts are available from the links below. Great Falls users should use the Bozeman script.

Billings script (billings.scp)

Bozeman script (bozeman.scp)

Save the script in the Windows\Program Files\Accessories\ folder.

To install the script, press the START button, select Programs, and then Accessories, and then select the Dial-Up Scripting Tool. Select the imt.net profile and add the script in the profile. Press the Apply button. Then press OK to close the Dial-Up Scripting tool.

Before you connect to Internet Montana, highlight the imt.net icon (in the Dial-Up Networking folder) and then click the right mouse button. Select properties and then Configure. Select Options and unselect the "Bring up window after dialing" option.

Now dial up Internet Montana with the new script

After pressing "Connect", you should see the initial dialing message box followed by a larger, light background box with a caption "Running - C:\Program Files...." It should complete the login automatically.

Common Problems:

1. Post dial terminal screen (black background) appears - be sure that the bring up post dial terminal screen option is NOT selected. This is found by clicking on the Internet icon with the right mouse button, selecting properties, then configure (button under modem type), then clicking the Options tab.

2. The Running script screen does not come up - be sure that the dialup scripting tool was installed in the Windows setup tab. Installing it under the Add/Remove programs section will NOT work.

3. Windows95 will not allow the password to be saved on the initial connect to screen -this is a common Windows95 problem with several causes. Most common is a corrupted password file. Delete the file (ends in .pwl, begins with your username - username.pwl) located in your Windows95 directory then try again. Also check to make sure that you have "Client for Microsoft Networks" selected when you double-click the Network icon in Control Panel. If it is not listed, select Add, Client, and select "Client for Microsoft Networks". When you restart your system, you should be able to use the Save Password feature.
