Historic Billings

The first inhabitants of the Billings area were Native Americans.  In 1877, traders built a town along the Yellowstone River, which they named Coulson.  The Northern Pacific Railroad surveyed the area In 1882. A town was built. They named their new town Billings, after the president of the Northern Pacific, Frederic Billings.  Since then, Billings has grown to become the largest city in the state of Montana, with roughly 100,000 citizens.

Above is a picture, taken many years ago of Montana Avenue, in the middle of what's now the historic district. The Oxford Hotel is on this block.  Below are 2 postcards with images of the historic district, drawn many years ago.
